'My Journey' by Griff

Wednesday 4 April 2018

My Journey by Paul Griffiths (Griff)

I started with Disability CanDo four years on a six week Confidence course. With my new found confidence three years ago I decided to start driving lessons, but I had to stop due to my anxiety and a breakdown. On the positive side, the confidence course helped me get back into learning, where I have completed several courses including POVA, Digital Champions, Mental Health First Aid, Paediatric First Aid, Barista Training, and Mental Health Social Care.

After the confidence course ended, all of the attendees decided that we wanted to continue meeting once a week and the Wednesday Wizards were formed. This allowed me to continue building my confidence whilst learning new skills with ITC.

The help and support I have received from all of the staff and CanDo allowed me to move out from my parents’ home in September 2015 into supported accommodation at Ty Obourne, where I made some real good friends. Now I live independently in my own flat.

In January 2018, I had my provisional driving license back from the DVLA and I am now ready to give driving another go. The last two years, I have been volunteering with Gofal, based in Foxes Lane. Where recently I have been given the opportunity for a fifteen hour paid placement with Pathways doing administration, to help set up a new community hub for mental health based in Bargoed, which I will be running.

Without the help from CanDo I would not be the bubbly, confident person I am today.

Advocacy Service Closure Notice

Wednesday 7 February 2018

Advocacy Service Closure Notice

Dear customers, collegues and stakeholders,

We regret to inform you that the Can Do Advocacy service will be closing on the 5th May 2018.

As you may be aware, our service has provided a Citizen Advocacy service that provided longer term support via a team of volunteers and an issue based independent service. Due to the nature of the support needed, we can no longer take referrals for the citizen advocacy service. We will continue to accept referrals as normal for the independent advocacy service up until the end of February.

After this date, referrals will need to be looked at on a case by case basis. Whether we can accept new referrals during March and April 2018 will depend upon capacity, waiting list numbers, service closure commitments and the complexity of the referral.

On a slightly more positive note, we have submitted an application to the National Lottery for a new service that will provide information, advice and advocacy. If successful, we will have funding for another three years.

This new project will support people who need to make significant decisions about their care needs and accommodation options due to a disability, ill health or frailty and will be available for adults living within the county borough of Caerphilly. It will support people who are in hospital or the community who are considering a move to a care home, considering a package of care at home or needing to adapt their property to maintain their independence and safety. The service will also routinely visit each of the 18 care homes in the borough and give residents an opportunity to express any views, concerns or worries they may have with a member of our team.

Please do not hesitate to contact me using the details below if you should require any additional information regarding the above.

Kind regards,

John Miles
